The book documents the extraordinary style of music that took shape in Detroit from the 1940s through the early 1960s, before the world was captivated by the sounds of Motown. This new form of popular music was dubbed “Rock and Roll” by Cleveland disc jockey Alan Freed. “The Birth of the Detroit Sound: 1940-1964” chronicles talents like John Lee Hooker, Hank Ballard & the Midnighters, Jackie Wilson, Jack Scott, Andre Williams, and Nolan Strong. Also featured are vintage photographs and profiles of record industry personalities, DJs, and long-forgotten venues where the giants of Detroit music once performed.
Marilyn Bond, a music industry insider and promoter, has been in the business since 1955. She coordinates shows featuring classic Detroit music throughout southeastern Michigan and manages many artists.
