The mayor who scorns his city

It's worth going to the article to read the comments...

    STEPHEN HENDERSON

The mayor who scorns his city

A respectful man would walk away

BY STEPHEN HENDERSON • FREE PRESS COLUMNIST • May 14, 2008

    Spare us, Mr. Mayor.

Spare us the mounting spectacle of City Council hearings to bounce you from office, coupled with a governor's investigation into whether she ought to put you out.

Spare us umpteen embarrassing images of you sitting at the defense table in a courtroom, fighting for your liberty while the whole city fights for its dignity.

And spare us the prospect of more humiliating revelations, of more uncovered misconduct or ham-handed nepotism, of more fodder for the jokes of the late-night national TV talkers.

When will it all be enough?

If you have any respect for Detroit and its people, any respect for your family, or even for yourself, resign now so the city you say you love so much can move on. Resign, so Detroit can thrive.

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's troubles, which have been surreal since the first stories about the text messages, have now spawned a circus atmosphere that permeates all things Detroit. Nothing resembling "business as usual" is getting done.

A deal to sell the city's share in the Windsor tunnel? Dream on. The city budget? Could be another tissue of lies. A replacement for outgoing Water Department Director Victor Mercado? Why on earth would council allow this mayor to choose a successor?

The official relationship between the council and the mayor effectively ended Tuesday, when a majority voted to go forward with hearings to decide whether he has forfeited his office through his actions. It's like a de-recognition of him as mayor by the city's legislative branch.

Working with Kilpatrick now would seem an admission of the council's unimportance in city governance, a thumb of the nose at the idea that they have the power to get rid of him. The grinding halt of city business has just started, as even some members of the mayor's administration will admit privately.

And this won't be solved anytime soon. Removal hearings will take at least two months, while the mayor's appeals -- guaranteed by the city charter -- will drag out even longer. The governor's proceedings will take at least as long and the mayor's criminal trial seems eons from today, with endless motions and legal challenges delaying any actual decisions.

We're looking at as much as a year of this nonsense hanging over everyone's head.

The only one who can stop all of this now is the mayor himself. Only the tragedy of unparalleled self-importance could convince him that he should stay past this point. Only the smallest man could think himself big enough to put everyone through all the wrangling, the cost and the sheer discomfort of all this.

The most disappointing part of this whole scandal has been Kilpatrick's arrogance, his insistence that his relentless efforts to stay in the Manoogian are about God, or the people, or the city.

    They're about him, his self-indulgence, self-appointment, and ultimately, self-destruction.

    Spare us.

    Re: Surprise from the Freep

    Cheryl48:

    From the Freep Wednesday morning:

Tuesday's filing deadline for this year's elections brought surprises in races from Detroit congressman to Oakland County prosecutor.

The biggest shock may be that the Rev. Horace Sheffield III, the well-known pastor of New Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, is running against U.S. Rep. John Conyers. Conyers has represented the mostly Detroit district since 1964.

    ************

How did we miss this one?

I heard about this on Mildred Gaddis' show this morning from her guest, Sam Riddle. Here is a link to Sheffield's interview on WJR.

Wow, newbie poster has a real stick up the patootie, eh.

Anywho, read the MetroTimes piece on the N-word.  Am I correct that anyone can FOIA the texts, so long as they are willing to pay for the production?

Lastly, I have a suggestion.  To go along with the Boycott Detroit initiative, let's host a Hunger Strike.  We won't eat until KMK leaves office, surely he won't allow the whole region to starve to death, would he??

I think it's time to move to the new forum.

It's the newly created forum that is being promoted by WXYZ. There will be new people posting with new ideas, thoughts.

Plus this one is getting very long and getting hard to back track to find "articles" or opinions of others.

See you guys on the new Board!!

The new board looks like it might be interesting to you. Its got its share of kobbleheads. Good luck.

Good Luck to all those who move to the next one. I am staying here as long as this one is open.  It has been alot more peaceful lately and it is very nice for posters not getting directly or in-directly attacked, in writing, for their opinions.
I agree!  I'm not into repeating myself repeatedly!  One of my pet peeves.
Boomer - I didn't understand, can you repeat that? ;-)

    Re: Guiles already showing favoritism

    GLDDET:

Ironically enough you can tell the individuals who do not live in Detroit. Their comments are coarse, and defammatory. And yet, how does that quote go..... "Sarcasm is a substitute for Intelligence". I am really getting a bit fed up with outsiders. Telegraph to the West, Alter to the East, 8 Mile to the North, and the Detroit River borders this City. To me the late Coleman A. Young said it best in response to the statement.... "Turn the lights out, Detroit is done". " Anybody who doesn't like Detroit hit 8 Mile Rd. And many of  those who took that statement to heart, eventually came back though many of them won't admit it. (By the way, L. Brooks Patterson made the statement)

Saying that to say this, the Judicial System is what it is. And yet, there are many levels of it. Anyone who believes any different is extremely naive. We have (3) three Court Systems that operate daily in our fair City. We have a City Court, a State Court, and a Federal Court who all operate Monday thru Friday at least from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  And let's not forget they all have their own versions of night court as well. So to imply anything as ludacris to say.... "Already showing Favoritsim"  warrants an equally idiotic response.   "DUH !!"  The WHOLE COUNTRY has their eyes on this one. Trust me if the "I's" aren't dotted, and the "T's" aren't crossed on this one, there will be H--L to pay.

So to all of the individuals who come to the City to purposely portray Detroit in a bad light. You know when you come to Tigers, Red Wing, and Lions games remember one thing. It's easy to put blame on everything, and everyone else. But, how would you feel if the spotlight is on you. You know like that moron who poured his beer on Ron Artest ? When it was all said and done he wasn't a resident. But, who got the blame... the City of Detroit. The average fan is not a moron, and does not want to be treated as such. And myself as a Resident, NEITHER do I.

Its late and I am a night owl so no one is probally reading this yet buy WOW who is this scary person "MOVEON" ?

OK everybody, let's switch - this one's been a problem, with over 500 pages of 7000+ posts it's slowing down/acting up. Let's get the "new" forum warmed up!

P.S. If you switch, you don't need to repeat your posts - "Letting go" is hard, but we've done it 3 or 4 times so far. The new un-cluttered board will work better .

    Re: Another Topic for Thursday

What the heck was that statement about "Who want's a white woman throwing out a black man" How very SAD a Person with an actual & somewhat honorable position would say that. I am glad all this kind of talk is comming out now because we have tip toed around the color issue for to long now. I for one am happy we can openly talk about black and white here  because its really no huge difference. Sure there is intresting heritatge  and struggles on both sides and its time we started learning about each other, respecting AND appreciating the differences, but lets take the negative relevance out of the picture, Thats what destroyed Detroit in the first place.

    Re: Mayor's Scandal: Prosecutor's Decision

Have we forgotten about a standard of our Nation's judicial system and what is stated before each trial begins after jury selection that the accused is presumed to be innocent until all proofs are received in evidence?  So is the case of Mayor Kilpatrick and Christine Beatty.  The media has exposed a situation that has captured the attention of all.  It is not to blame the media for reporting a story, but in the case of Mayor Kilpatrick it has distracted all the good that has occurred during his administration and the visions for the future of a great City.  Detroit had become stagnant and lacked growth in business, but today we see new businesses and new residential development popping up all over Detroit.  Little is said of his revitilazation of our City, because so much time is caught up in the scandal of sex, lies and text messages.  City Council should be about the business of the City and leave the matter of the law to the Courts.  Let the trial go forward and in the event Mayor Kilpatrick is convicted, then the matter is closed.  It is an imcredible waste of tax dollars to use Council time on a witch hunt to decide what to do with the Mayor.  The Mayor and his Chief of Staff may be morally corrupt, but that is a matter for their love ones and GOD to deal with.  If he seek redemption, repents and is forgiven that is a matter for Carlita and GOD.  We are too busy convicting the Mayor for past trangressions, things that happened more than six (6) years ago.  As to the perjury the trial goes on and the Mayor will have his day in Court as all Americans have as a right.
