Mayor Kilpatrick owes city full disclosure on defense funds

    July 18,2008

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's legal defense fund just doesn't add up to the cost of his dream team of pricey lawyers and public relations people assembled to beat all the felony charges against him.

How he's paying these bills might not be anyone's business if Kilpatrick was an honest public servant with a track record for openness. But this is a man who has used public money before to enrich family and friends, someone who has organized kickback schemes and hoodwinked City Council out of $9 million to cover his personal foibles. He is an elected official who has demonstrated great difficulty with the truth. So questions are warranted.

Given all the legal expenses the city already is paying because of the mayor, Detroit taxpayers deserve to know that his criminal defense costs are not being paid with any public funds (the mayor's lawyers and PR people insist not), and whether the money is coming from someone getting city contracts or hoping for some other return on investment.

According to IRS filings made by Kilpatrick's Detroit Justice Fund, the mayor was able to raise just $185,000 between April and June for his legal defense, and has paid out $165,000.

But he has three lawyers, each working for $700 an hour. One, Jim Thomas, said Wednesday that he had already billed for $200,000; the fund has paid him only $85,000.

The mayor makes $176,000 a year, minus a 10% giveback he accepted a few years ago to help balance the city's budget. So he has some means of his own to pay legal bills.

But the costs have to be staggering, perhaps already approaching $500,000 or more. More likely than not, someone is helping him bridge that gap, and, under the circumstances, Detroiters deserve to know who it is.

Genuine candor has not been Kilpatrick's long suit, but a little now would be better than yet another surprise down the road.

Excellent find, mia.  These questions need to be answered - as they say, do the math!  This dream team is costing a FORTUNE, and the mere $185K raised so far per the IRS statement filed wouldn't even pay for lunch for these high-flyers.  So who is really funding his defense?

(Actually, KK probably has millions stashed away, so I imagine he could fund it himself at this point.)

Who paid for pro-mayor publication is mystery

BY M.L. ELRICK AND ZACHARY GORCHOW • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITERS • July 19, 2008

Detroiters depressed about the public schools crisis, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's legal woes or the FBI probe of City Hall got some good news in the mail this week: Everything's great!

That's the message delivered in a full-color, glossy, 36-page magazine titled "Detroit, Then and Now," recapping the city's progress in the six years since Kilpatrick took office. The publication, with 18 photos of the mayor, does not say who paid for it, nor does it bear the "not paid for at taxpayers expense" notation that has run with some previous pro-mayor publications, like the "Detroit Love" booklet at his 2006 inaugural.

Mayoral spokeswoman Denise Tolliver said Thursday the city did not pay for the magazine or mailing. She said she did not know who did and learned of it only last week.

"I thought it was nice and pretty," she said.

Bradley Thompson II, president and chief executive officer of Inland Press, the company that printed the publication, declined to say who or what entity paid for it, citing client confidentiality. He declined to say how many copies Inland Press printed but called it a "big project."

Kamau Marable, a political consultant with Detroit-based Urban Consulting Group, which is unconnected with the publication, called it "the mayor's way of kicking off his re-election effort and trying to refocus his constituency and Detroiters in particular off of scandal back to his efforts and accomplishments."

Top House Dems To Campaign For Rep. Kilpatrick

    POSTED: 11:20 am EDT July 18, 2008

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and other top congressional Democrats are coming to Michigan to campaign for Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick.

The mother of embattled Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick faces a three-way Democratic primary on Aug. 5 in her re-election effort.

Pelosi, who is from California, will visit Grosse Pointe Farms and Wyandotte July 25.
IBSYS.ad.AdManager.registerPosition({ "iframe": false, "addlSz": "", "element": "ad_N700074.3D4F", "interstitials": false, "beginDate": "", "endDate": "", "getSect": "yes", "name": "square", "qString": "", "width": "300", "height": "250", "section": "", "useId": "16921055", "interactive": false, "useSameCategory": false, "topic": "", "swSectionRoot": "", "useZone": "", "type": "DOM" }); dcmaxversion = 9 dcminversion = 6 Do On Error Resume Next plugin = (IsObject(CreateObject("ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFlash." & dcmaxversion & ""))) If plugin = true Then Exit Do dcmaxversion = dcmaxversion - 1 Loop While dcmaxversion >= dcminversion sponsor
Charles Rangel of New York will appear in Detroit July 22.

James Clyburn of South Carolina will visit Detroit Aug. 3, two days before the primary.

Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick first was elected in 1996. She typically has cruised to re-election, but her son's legal troubles have complicated her bid this year. Kwame Kilpatrick has been indicted on perjury and other charges.

As I stated in earlier posts the democrates will do and say anything to stay in power

This story really ticks me off - why would these four Dem's come to Detroit to help Carolyn Cheeks-Kilpatrick stay in office - The Fed's are crawling all over the Kilpatrick family and friends and we have a federal grand jury that will be looking at them.  I called Charles Rangle office and sent Pelosi an email and emailed Lou Dobbs  - this is disgusting!

You are hilarious, hope you get a response

I even sent and email to the New York Times - I don't need a response but people should know who these people support.

Nancy Pelosi campaigned last time against the Republican "culture of corrption", because unfortunately, that idiot Mark Foley (R-FL) got caught up in a text message scandal with young House pages.  But her ethics are also questionable; her husband is a gazillionaire businessman from San Francisco, and she has pushed forth a ton of legislation to benefit his/their business ventures.

And she has steadfastly stood by Rep. William Jefferson, D-LA, who, as we've discussed previously, was found with the $100K in his freezer and who has a ton of family members now under indictment, supposedly tied in to his ilicit dealings.

There are lots of people in the CBC (Congressional Black Caucus) that are in trouble, so the problems of  Mama Cheeks are no big deal to them.  Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) was a judge and was actually removed from the bench for corruption!  So what does he do but run for Congress, and the idiot electorate actually voted him into the House of Representatives, and have re-elected him to that position time after time!  Charlie Rangel (D-NY) just this week was caught with four apartments in NYC in a rent-controlled district.  Unlike Detroit, New York has extremely high real estate costs and property is scarce.  Yet this hog took four for himself, while people who can ill afford any housing are out of luck.

So these are the friends of Mama Cheeks.  Her troubles are NOTHING compared to what some of her peers are involved with.

iI got one of them wonderful folders from Kwame also. It will make good liner for my dog's litter box. What was funny was that there is a picture of Kwame in there with a hard hat in the wintetime overseeing demolition of an abandoned home. I recognized that picture. It was cropped down to just Kwame. The full picture shows Bobby freakin Fergeson standing near Kwame. hahaha

Just wondering what the cost was to have a 33 page glossy magazine printed and sent to every registered voter in Detroit? Wonder who paid for it as well.

Just fed my dog beans, sausage, brocolli and a teaspoon of chocolate. This should add some color to Kwame's magazine.

AT&T sucks as bad as Kwame

Just a quick note to all of you. I won't be posting for some time. I just cancelled my internet access from AT&T. They kept trying to double my internet charges then they would say they were sorry for the "mistake" and it would never happen again, must have been a computer glitch etc.........then a couple months later the same thing would happen even though they assured me it would not happen again. Screw me once, shame on you, screw me twice , shame on me, screw me three times, bye bye AT&T.

AT&T runs about as efficiently as the City of Detroit. I cancelled my phone line as well and the lil, nasty operator tried to tell me I would lose my 911 service...........hahahahahaha. I told her, I live in Detroit. I don't have 911 service. My 911 service sits locked and loaded in one of my closets.

So, thank you all. It has been real and it has been fun but it hasn't been real fun. Take care and God Bless and don't start any rumors that Kwame's people finally caught up with me. I haven't been killed by Lorenzo Jones, I just got into a tiff with a snotty ATT&T rep.

Be back soon under a new name..........I hope.

    Love and kisses,

    Tax

    NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taxpayer, please get back up and running soon - you are a valuable member of the board and will be missed.

I had Comcast for years, but ended up going with Wide Open West (WOW).  They're probably just as good as anyone re: cable, phone and internet, but what I am really impressed with is their internet technical support.  They are just phenomenal, and I would highly suggest them to everyone!  They're 24 hour support, and will stay on the phone to help forever, it seems, with various (but not all) connection and e-mail issues.

Their phone number is : 1-866-496-9669
