    Re: MONICA THE ***

    Monica Conyers

[edit] Threat of Murder and Assult

In February of 2008, details of an exchange between Conyer's wife Monica Conyers and an aide to Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, DeDan Milton, were made available through the Detroit News[7]. The congressman's wife, serving as the president pro tem of the Detroit City Council, allegedly "made several threatening movements" toward Milton in what he described as "a threatening manner" and also threatened to get a gun and shoot him, as well as stating that she "had four brothers" who would "whup his ass if she asked them." She allegedly ran at Milton, and had to be restrained by the trustees. Milton was backed up in his recalling of events by David Clark, chair of Detroit's General Retirement System. Milton has filed a police report about the incident.

Mrs. Conyers has denied the allegations, and made counter accusations alleging that it was Milton who was threatening and had to be restrained. She also alleges that Mayor Kilpatrick's office has shown a "pattern of disrespect towards women." She alleges the incident started when Milton said "Shut Up" and used an expletive. Clark states that Milton only stated "Can we move on, we covered this."

Police are investigating, but it's not clear what crime Conyers could be charged with. The report was categorized as "harassing communications." Maria Miller, spokeswoman for the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, declined to speculate. No audio or video recordings are made of pension board meetings.

The police reports have since been withdrawn. [8]

    [edit] Name Calling

Monica Conyers has also created controversy by calling the Detroit City Council President "Shrek" during an argument in which Conyers refused to stop speaking when she did not have the floor of the meeting. After the incident, Conyers was asked by a highschool woman if she felt that she was setting a good example of how an adult should act, after which Conyers began to argue with the young woman on the public panel. [9]

    [edit] FBI Investigation

Monica Conyers is also under FBI investigation for potentially taking financial bribes from sludge processing company Synagro. Conyers has not reported for duty to the City Coucil since the investigation became public, citing a "minor surgery," although Mrs. Conyers was recently seen at a private function where she refused to speak with reporters. Welcome back Laura.  I hope your grandson is doing better also.

Thanks for explaining spousal "privilege".   But if she is not a city employee and used city-owned equipment, doesn't that take away her right to privacy?  I am speaking of text messages not phone calls.

The national media should be made aware of CCK's awful remark.  Pelosi is a lady, I doubt she would approve of that remark.  She is 63 yrs. old not 13!

Thank you RayStar. I contend that there is no expectation of privacy on publicly owned devices. The law that is sighted speaks, from what Indytf and I interpreted, to privately owned "pagers." There must be something said within the text that there was an expectation of privacy (intimate) or Judge Giles is going to let the appellate court figure it out. My guess, it's the second. But again spousal conversations are vigorously protected.
I am glad these conversations are protected.  One thing we have learned for sure with this mess be very careful when using electronic devices!
It goes back to the old saying "Don't put anything in writing you don't want read, and don't say anything you don't want heard." Some of these people were never taught the basics.

Another favorite saying of my mothers was "God gave you two ears and one mouth. Use them in that proportion." But having 12 kids, my mom would say anything to keep the noise down!

    Detroit Uncovered

    Are Granholm's Hands Clean?
Raise your hand if you were surprised by what was reported recently about Governor Granholm basically calling the feds on behalf of Bernard and Kwame Kilpatrick.  One story reported that she called to see if she could collaborate with the feds on their case against city officials. But another story reported that she was actually calling to get Intel on what kind of case the feds have so that she could carry that information back to the Kilpatrick's.

Synagro Vice-President James Rosendall the," bag man" for the feds was an appointee of Governor Granholm's, which probably left her wondering if she was on wire tap and would at any point be the focus of the federal investigation. Rosendall video taped Ken Cockrels chief of staff accepting cash. Onething is clear now and we can finally put it to rest and that is Governor Granholm will not act on the request of City Council to remove Mayor Kilpatrick.

As the Detroit News Editorial by Nolan Finley said, " She has no spine". And her hands may not be clean.

The un-indicted co-conspirator, Edward MacNamara's legacy is proving itself once again. Grandholm has never, and will never make a tough decision, especially against one of her fellow MacNamara's proteges.

Sure she was calling on Kwame's behalf -- they're thicker than thieves in the political world. They might not like each other (and I'm not sure about that) but they sure need each other. I wouldn't be surprised if Grandholm has promised Michigan to Obama in exchange for a White House position (Attorney General) and she needs Kwame to deliver Detroit. Grandholm's political career is far from over and she'll do whatever it takes to get her there.

That's why it didn't surprise me she is on her own timetable regarding Council's request and is now saying she'll wait for "due process." She wants a job nationally and can't get elected to one, so she's has to bargain her way there.

    PEOPLE & POLITICS

Chaos rules on hard city choices

BY STEPHEN HENDERSON • FREE PRESS COLUMNIST • July 20, 2008

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is right:

The plan to lease out Detroit's interest in the Windsor tunnel is a smart and crafty way to get quick cash to keep the city's books in balance.

It's also a necessity with no palatable alternatives now, given that it was planned for the 2007-08 budget, which closed June 30. If the tunnel deal doesn't go through, the city faces either massive layoffs (with corresponding devastation to already strained city services) or a risky effort to float deficit reduction bonds that will come with high interest and may hurt the city's credit rating.

...................The tunnel deal has got to get done to keep the city financially whole.

    Ultimately, nothing else matters.

Detroiters, who are already enduring enough embarrassment thanks to the stench of scandal in City Hall, don't need financial chaos to make it worse.

STEPHEN HENDERSON is deputy editorial page editor of the Free Press

    ****************************************************************************

Although I have always agreed with Stephen Henderson he is WAY OFF BASE ON THIS ONE.  What he doesn't realize is ......that this administration has mismanaged and stolen 100's of millions (if not billions) of Taxpayer's $$$$. To support the deal on the tunnel for any reason .....is as irresponsible as the administrations handling of the budget to begin with. What cuts have the adminstration made to reconcile the mass exodus of residents leaving the city? ALL businesses are downsizing to re-balance the workforce with sales and the economic downturn to survive.

Why hasn't the City of Detroit mad the same adjustments? How can the services get any worse than they are currently... with this over-prescribed workforce. Less residents with the same number of city workers should have improved services to those left. Insted basic services / performance is at an all time low  with residency at an all time low. Stop supporting saving all these jobs because this "one time fix" is as crooked a deal ...as ALL the rest of the deals this administration has brokered.

Why doesn't everyone realize that the "lack of details and answers of the tunnel deal" are for a reason. This Authority has no intention of  re-paying this loan. They want the title for the tunnel  turned over to the authority so they can sell the tunnel and pocket the proceeds on their way out the door. Why should the mayor appoint anyone on the authority? This administration is pushing for another embezzelment opportunity.

Memo to CITY COUNCIL ......"DON'T DO IT" ....LEAVE THE FEW ASSETS REMAINING ALONE .....FOREVER.

Yes, good points, WCH.  And as you state, this would be a "one time fix".  With this line of thinking, something will need to be sold each year to balance the budget.  How many assets does the city have left?  And can or should these assets really be sold?

As someone pointed out the other day, the Tunnel is a revenue generating asset.  Can Detroit really afford to give up that revenue stream, whatever it is?  Knowing how things operate in that city, I would doubt whether anyone did much of a financial impact analysis to see whether this is at all a good idea long term.

Well said Missy.  I just read Stephen's column.  I don't want the tunnel sold as there must be something else we can do to generate revenue.   It is like this city has lost it's mind.  Who is checking the books?  All this scandal mess has just consumed the city!

    Missy/Keo,

    I agree with you both!!!

    To Mr Henderson...

Putting the tunnel in the pawn shop won't fix anything. You will be taking 25 years of revenue and converting it into a 25 year debt/bill. How about rightsizing the city payrolls to manage within your budget. How about not spending tens of millions of $$$  on lies, cover-ups, lawsuits and attorneys. How about electing a mayor who actually knows what they are doing? How about addressing the problem instead of encouraging the city council ....to put a band aid on the corpse. GOD WILLING kk won't be around to do any further damage.

    Governor Changing Position On Scandal?

    Last Update: 7/18 5:38 pm
(WXYZ) Our reporting partners at The Detroit News say Governor Jennifer Granholm has approached a top official in the U.S. Attorney's Office to explore a possible joint resolution of the ongoing F.B.I. investigation of City Hall and and Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's conduct in office.

Sources of The Detroit News said within about two weeks of receiving a May 20 request from the Detroit City Council that she remove Kilpatrick from office, Granholm approached an official in the U.S. Attorney's Office about whether the City Council's request and a federal investigation related to City Hall Contracts could be jointly resolved.  Granholm essentially wanted to know whether she and federal prosecutors could get both  issues wrapped up together.

The official discussed Granholm's question with U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy and told Granholm to inform the mayor that his attorney should contact the U.S. Attorney's Office.  An attorney for the mayor has not contacted the U.S. Attorney's Office.  Granholm has not discussed the City Council's request to oust the mayor while the matter is pending in her office.

    Re: DETROIT UNDERCOVER

    Synagro Tentacles
Our sources were correct in informing us a few months ago that there would be a Grand Jury assembled sometime this summer and that is apparently where we happen to be right now in this Synagro Scandal, keeping track of who the players are or who the focus is on seems to change daily however. This Synagro mess can't be the only investigation being conducted by the feds into Detroit's corruption. Rumors have swirled since 2005 that the feds were coming and indictments would follow but according to the most recent published reports the feds started wire taping Bernard Kilpatrick, the mayor's dad, in January 2007. Prior to that it was believed that Bernard Kilpatrick would face indictment for corruption related to his days under former Wayne County Executive Ed McNamara. The fact that his phones have been wired since early 2007 should give pause to a lot of people who've had conversations with him over the last year and a half. Even Governor Granholm called the feds to see what they had. (We'll get to her later).  Kilpatrick's name has come up a lot when business dealings in the city are mentioned. He's been the go to guy and he's been rewarded by his son. What we know at this moment is this Synagro Scandal has tentacles and will extend beyond Synagro. Those phone conversations Bernard Kilpatrick and others had weren't limited to Synagro. Just take a look back over the last few years at what major contracts caused controversy and smelled of corruption, Cobo Hall is one. The number of co-conspirators seems to be rising rapidly and many will be blown away by the final count. We told you before that this is the mother of all scandals and could be just what the doctor ordered to clean up this city and wake up the people.

    Re: DETROIT UNDERCOVER

    What about being an example?
Did you happen to catch the act of Chief Bully-Cummings on Channel 7 News last week wagging her finger in the face of reporter Steve Wilson.

Here is a paragraph from the Law Enforcement Code of Ethics:
I will keep my private life unsullied as an example to all; maintain courageous calm in the face of danger, scorn or ridicule; develop self-restraint; and be constantly mindful of the welfare of others. Honest in though and deed and both my personal and official life.......

It was unprofessional and not a good example to set. It won't come but the Chief owes the officers she command an apology.

    Promotional exam manipulation
The numbers on the recent promotional exam have been recalibrated again. Because of this latest change some scores dropped but others, to know ones surprise were raised. From what we're told among the scores that were raised from a failing score to now passing are 5 members of Mayor Kilpatrick's executive protection unit. We should mention, the person doing the recalibrating is Commander Brian Stair, the mayor's hand picked successor to former Deputy Chief Gary Brown to lead the Internal Affairs Unit. Now for the record, most mayors and chief's will look out for their staffs, it's been done before but where the problem comes in is when others are adversely affected by the manipulating of the numbers. If anyone who had previously passed but now failed because of the change that's a problem. And if these people who were shown favoritism were given any advantage at all over the other officers, i.e. a look at the exam then that's criminal. Politics will always be a part of this process but personal feelings and denial of promotion because you don't like someone is wrong and that's apparently is why this test was given in the first place. There were we're told several people on the last promotional list that Chief Bully-Cummings did not like who were next in line for promotion, so a new test was authorized. Unfortunately City Council could not be convinced that there was a problem so the test went forward. Ironically, those who they wanted to favor didn't score very well so the test scores were manipulated, not once but twice.  The poster child for what could become another test scandal is Police Sergeant Sherell Stanley. In 1998 as a rookie she took and passed both the investigators exam and the sergeants exam. She received perfect scores on both. In 2004 she scored the highest in the entire department on the Lieutenants exam.  Because the new system former Chief Jerry Oliver put in place is so heavily waited toward a subjective opinion and not the raw scores, Sergeant Stanley went before a board, hand picked by department brass who caused her to go from #1 overall and she was dropped to #60 and never received the promotion to Lieutenant. She is the first member of the department to ever score the highest on the promotional exam and never get promoted.  On this 2008 test she again scored very high, this time a 94%. When the assessments start in August everyone will be waiting to see if this brilliant officer who is also an attorney by the way will be the victim once again of department politics and favoritism. City Council and the feds should be keeping an eye on this.

Her hands are definitely not clean Kathy. But trying to tie a federal investigation (and there are multiple investigations going on at the same time) into a municipal -- state problem is just plain wrong.

I hope that the fed's tell her to stuff it.

The amount of probable cause necessary to even request a warrant for wire taps is extremely high. Wire taps are usually just the icing on the cake in a case. They also will prove a criminal organization, which is probably what the fed's are looking at. Gotta love the RICO act.

Let the dirty politicos fall. I'm so tired of the MacNamara machine still going long after his death, only now the KILLpatrick machine is starting to overtake it.

Getting so I hate them all.

She taught Business Administration in DPS, which I'm guessing is high school.

Kwame taught also. Isn't it amazing that no former students have come forward to announce that they were the one teacher in their lives that turned them around? My guess is that they were just putting their time in.
