Karmanos: Kilpatrick should not resign
By KATHERINE YUNG • FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER • May 16, 2008
Detroit business leader Peter Karmanos Jr. said today that he does not think Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick should resign.
“He certainly should not resign because he’s the best we have,” the chairman and chief executive of Compuware Corp. told the Free Press during a company celebration this morning in downtown Detroit’s Campus Martius.
Karmanos declined to comment further. Karmanos agreed to move his company headquarters downtown in 1999, before Kilpatrick took office, and the new building is a hub of activity adjacent to Campus Martius Park.
Karmanos’ comments came just days after the Detroit City Council voted to launch two separate initiatives to try to oust the mayor, who is facing perjury and other charges related to the text message scandal.
Since the mayoral scandal broke, few of the city’s business leaders have been willing to publicly say anything about what the mayor should do. The board of Detroit Renaissance, a group of about 50 corporate chief executives in the region, is divided over whether it should take a stand on the controversy or continue to keep a low profile.
Karmanos has played a key role in efforts to revitalize Detroit, but he said that his work in this area has not been impeded by the mayoral text message scandal.

And a great comment from the freep forum:

Looks like MotownJohnnie said it all. Pox on Karmanos.
Willing to bet, the Karmanos name will surface in the text messages. Interesting coincidence after yesterday's electronic information "policy change", which is legally null and void. These people are complete idiots, and now they’re complete and desperate idiots.
Definitely in panic mode. Their mouths are moving much faster than their brains, without thinking about long term consequences of them. But then, when did any of them worry about consequences?
Makes me wonder though, what's going on in the background that is setting this off? Something, something big. Unless it's starting to become real - the shock has worn off.
Obviously, whatever is going on in the background it is so devastating that no one can keep a level head--they have ALL imploded. Have you noticed that kwame's attorneys cannot hold their heads up, or maintain eye contact these days?

Seems like KK's team is running out of spin. I'm not seeing the bluster that was there in past weeks. Too much is coming out and we' re still waiting for the Feds. Remember the city lawyers that were called on the carpet (I know it's not a carpet, but I can't remember what it is called) by the state bar. We still haven't heard the results for them. Then there is the police department brass... need I say more? AND, Tolliver and McFail have faded into the woodwork. And where is the high priced pr lady? It's not working and they don't know what to do next!
I hope a whole bunch of city employees have been saving up, because I think they're going to be in the unemployment lines before too much longer.

We can certainly expect to hear the karmanos name come up in the text messages . . . What happened karmanos did they film your participation in the ORGY unbeknownst to you, and you just found out? Of course they did, that's what the ORGY was all about; LEVERAGE -- to get people to do what they wanted them to do -- through blackmail. That's why they invited the Southfield police chief.
This idiot fool had the plan down from day one, mommy and daddy schooled him, and told him exactly what to do – have an ORGY and film it, then they can control everybody and the stupid gangster family rules forever . . . but here comes the X Factor Carlita with bat in tow. Now the plan is just a wee bit messed up. These are STUPID PEOPLE!
And incidentally, based on kwame’s desperation, I would not be surprised to hear that he got a gun and started shooting people – this boy is a sociopath and has always been one. Look at how much weight he has lost – it’s because he is scared out of his wits, not to mention the fact that his irritable bowel syndrome is literally kicking his ass, isn’t that right kwame? It won’t be long before you’re going to need to keep some Depends (adult diapers) with you.
And good for you.
The thug wouldn't shoot anyone, he hides behind women's skirts.
But he's reached the point where he realizes there are no more skirts to hide under. He is DESPARATE and has to blame someone.
A man like kk will always find a skirt to hide behind.

Here is the guy that should be our first black president
'They're standing on the corner and they can't speak English. I can't even talk the way these people talk: Why you ain't, Where you is, What he drive, Where he stay, Where he work, Who you be...
And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth.
In fact you will never get any kind of job making a decent living. People marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an education, and now we've got these knuckleheads walking around.
The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids. $500 sneakers for what?? And they won't spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics. I am talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where were you when he was 2?? Where were you when he was 12?? Where were you when he was 18 and how come you didn't know that he had a pistol?? And where is the father?? Or who is his father? People putting their clothes on backward: Isn't that a sign of something gone wrong? People with their hats on backward, pants down around the crack, isn't that a sign of something? Or are you waiting for Jesus to pull his pants up? Isn't it a sign of something when she has her dress all the way up and got all type of needles [piercing] going through her body? What part of Africa did this come from?? We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans; they don't know a thing about Africa . With names like Shaniqua, Taliqua and Mohammed and all of that crap, and all of them are in jail. Brown or black versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person's problem. We have got to take the neighborhood back. People used to be ashamed. Today a woman has eight children with eight different 'husbands' -- or men or whatever you call them now. We have millionaire football players who cannot read. We have million-dollar basketball players who can't write two paragraphs. We, as black folks have to do a better job. Someone working at Wal-Mart with seven kids, you are hurting us. We have to start holding each other to a higher standard.
We cannot blame the white people any longer.'

Re: Karmanos Finally Speaks....
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick wants his office to take over the city’s distribution of federal grants, a practice that has been a function of the Detroit City Council for decades.

Re: Karmanos Finally Speaks....
Company linked to Mayor Soon the Detroit Police Department's Central District, located at Woodward and Hancock will be moving to Woodward and East Grand Blvd. The current building has been sold to the owner's of Fishbone's Restaurant. The new home of the Central District will reportedly also house police headquarters. That building at 1300 Beaubien will be vacated for repairs and reconstruction. But return to that building is unknown, if at all. The new Central District building is reportedly owned by Lakeshore Engineering Services. If you recall in 2005 that building was used as campaign headquarters for Mayor Kilpatrick's re-election in fact there were news reports that showed several appointees including current Assistant Chief of Police leaving that location carrying campaign signs and loading them into his city owned vehicle. However records don't reveal any payments made to the owners for rent of space during that period. Lakeshore Engineering, the owners of the new police district are major contributors to Mayor Kilpatrick. The city has signed a 10 year lease on the building that officers report is not designed for law enforcement purposes. If that's not enough, Lakeshore is apparently a major beneficiary of significant water department contracts. In fact Bobby Ferguson is reportedly the minority partner on several significant no-bid and expansion contracts involving the Lakeshore company. Lakeshore also received a contract from the Port Authority to design the Port of Call that will be built on the city's water front to welcome cruise ships. Art Blackwell, a Kilpatrick buddy sits on the board of the Port Authority.
Karmanos wants Kilpatrick to stay Okay we've been waiting on the business community , particularly the white sector of the business community to weigh in on the text scandal and whether Kilpatrick should stay or go and now we hear that Compuware Chariman Peter Karmanos thinks Mayor Kilpatrick shouldn't resign. Certainly he's entitled to his opinion and we have no problem with him supporting the mayor if that's where he thinks he should be however it a little bit insulting to the people of Detroit considering the overwhelming belief from most sane people is that Kilpatrick should go. Apparently Karmanos thinks he knows better than the long list of those we've identified as wanting Kilpatrick to leave. Dave Bing of Bing Steel is among those who said as much and really who's opinion holds more value in Detroit Dave Bing's or Peter Karmanos who we must remind you allegedly threatened that he was going to get former Detroit Public School CEO William Coleman II because Coleman didnot give him a multi-million dollar contract to provide computer software to DPS. Is it fair to suggest that Karmanos has a vested interest in Kilpatrick remaining mayor?
Its become clear that its even more dangerous to the city and its future to leave Mayor Kilpatrick in place at this point. Not only is he distracted by the felony charges and looming court battles but he has the City Council beginning forfeiture proceedings and the Governor potentially getting involved. Mayor Kilpatrick has to raise money to fight these legal matters and its been reported that contractors and others with ties to the administration are being told to kick in some dollars to help in this effort. Also the mayor wants to takeaway City Councils ability to deliver federal grants to various programs which if done places those organizations in an uncomfortable situation. If true, the mayor would essentially be using the power of his office to raise the needed money and and keep his opposition from having the benefit of contracts and grant dollars. The entire scandal has severely affected city business and the delivery of services to citizens. That, we're sure Karmanos doesn't have as an issue in Oakland county or wherever he lives. |

I am thinking Gene had Lana Stempien, Chick Rutherford and Tamara Greene killed. I think Gene, and his massive knowledge, rational and education are just way too much for the FBI.
A long way? A monkey could be trained in less time to change the font and color for the love of God.
I asked, politely for the 68pt font, BOLD, and red to not be used, because it hurt my eyes. So, I guess this is Old Gene's way of saying f u.
And you people encourage him. So much for mature adults posting on a message board. I have ignored it for days, and none of you have a problem with Gene being so obviously, obnoxious with intent so... I am done ignore his ignorance.
Too bad Old Gene was't driving westbound on 94 this afternoon... could have eased the drain on the Big 3 welfare system. It is encouraging that at least he has a job that matches his intellect, wouldn't want him around other humans. Mowing grass is probably pushing his intellect as it is.
Use as big of a font as you want Gene. No doubt it is in response to your "Napolean Complex".

You have Bing suggesting he should resign and Karmanos suggesting he not resign. Extreme opposities. I have always had respect for Bing...just based on what I have read, seen and heard. I do not know him anymore than I would know Karmanos.
