    Council to consider lawyer contracts

By ZACHARY GORCHOW • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • July 24, 2008

A Detroit City Council committee is expected today to consider several controversial contracts for legal services related to the text message scandal.

The Internal Operations Committee is scheduled at 1 p.m. to take up contracts requested by the administration of Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick that would pay attorneys representing top city officials. One set of contracts would pay the legal bills of John Johnson Jr., the head of the city’s Law Department, both for representation in the Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy’s investigative subpoena of Kilpatrick and former chief of staff Christine Beatty as well as the complaint filed against Johnson with the Attorney Grievance Commission.

Another contract would cover the legal bills for city attorney Ellen Ha, who also is the target of a complaint before the Attorney Grievance Commission. Another contract would pay a firm representing the city in the Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the Free Press and Detroit News.

A final contract would pay attorney Mayer Morganroth $100,000 for his representation of Beatty in the lawsuit filed against Kilpatrick, the city, Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings and Beatty by the family of Tamara Greene. Greene’s family has accused the city of failing to adequately investigate her slaying.

Several council members have voiced reluctance to support using taxpayer dollars on these contracts.
