Laura56:Awhile back, I think it was Missy and, I got into a discussion regarding the old Mansion. She wanted it sold, I do not. We continued for a few posts and then I private emailed her wondering if it was a "conditional gift" by the Manoogians.
Since then I have discovered that the "gift" was indeed conditional. If the City chooses not to provide the maintenance on the house and continue to use it as the "official" residence of the Mayor then it reverts back to the Manoogians.
Cockrel has stated that he wasn't contemplating moving into it -- heck for what? He's not in the position for a full term,so far. But he has stated that he would like to use it for events. Annual Christmas/Holiday celebration, Easter egg hunt etc.
Just to let you know, there are more cities than NY and DTW that have mansions -- Denver, LA, MSP that I can think of off the top of my head.
I still think we should keep it. Not only for a reminder of the grandeur of what was but also a promise of what we'll become.
You changed my mind Laura....there's a previous post where I felt it should be sold or used for other purposes. I agree with you that it should not be sold. I believe that your last sentence was the best part of the whole post....I was mistaken in my thoughts. It wasn't the mansion that was the nasty part of all of this..it was the occupants. I'd like to continue to think it can be a symbol of the grandeur of Detroit long ago, and a promise of a brighter future. Thanks for posting that.
