Granholm Approval Rating Lowest Ever

Governor Granholm's job approval rating is the lowest it has ever been, a new poll shows.

In the survey of 600 likely voters, 66 percent gave the Democratic governor a negative job rating. Her previous low mark was a 59 percent negative rating in November, when she easily won re-election for a second term.

The poll was conducted by EPIC-MRA of Lansing for WXYZ and The Detroit News. It had a sampling error margin of plus or minus four percentage points.

Poll respondents said they still like the governor.

Fifty-two percent gave her an overall favorable rating, compared with 42 percent unfavorable.

Ban Smoking in Michigan Bars, Restaurants?

The House Commerce Committee will hear testimony on a bill that would prohibit smoking in Michigan bars and restaurants.

Similar bills proposed in the last seven years got just one hearing - in 2004 - and never received a vote when the Legislature was controlled by Republicans. But now Democrats lead the House, bringing hope to health groups and other supporters of a statewide smoking ban.

the verdict in the whistle blower case against the city and the mayor - shows the cesspool of corruption in the Detroit political leadership from the mayor, city council to school board continues - starting with Coleman Young and continuing today.

Detroit needs new political leadership ...now...and a new police chief not tied to the mayor...residents, visitors and Detroit police officers need to know that the Police Department is led by executives who make the best decisions to protect them - not political decisions.

Pistons Fire Flip Saunders

The Detroit Pistons have fired head coach Flip Saunders just days after the team lost to the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals.

"Decisions like this are difficult to make, especially with the success we have had throughout the last three regular-seaons," Dumars said in a statement. "However, at this time, I feel it is necessary to make a change. I thank Flip for his hard work and dedication, but it is time for a new voice to lead our team."

Saunders, who was named head coach in 2005, had a regular-season record of 176-70 in three seasons. In three trips to the NBA Playoffs under Saunders, the Pistons were 30-21 and reached the Eastern Conference Finals each year.

Saunders had one year left on a four-year contract. Dumars has scheduled a 2 p.m. media availability to discuss the move.

Senate Salaries Posted

It's funny that the Senate is posting the salaries of their staff and positions. However, they are not going to list the names of the employees. I do not think this is fair seeing how the Lansing Newspaper posted all 53,000 state employees names and their work locations.

By the Lansing Sate Journal posting the sate employees salaries and work locations has caused problems for those employees who work in Corrections and those employees who are in domestic violence cases who do not want their spouse or boyfiriend knowing their work location. The Lansing Bureau Journal did this under the guise of FOIA.

I think the Senate should go one step further to not only list their salaries and those extra perks they receive.

TRAFFIC SIGNALS

I find it to be such a waste of gasoline to be sitting at a traffic light when no cars are crossing the other way. This is especially true in the morning hours and late at night. Woldn't it be great concept if our state would review the traffic light system throughout Michigan and come up with a way to have the lights blinking at these times or have a progressive light system so we wouldn't have to catch every light during the day like on Grand River between Novi and Wixom Rd I have called the Oakland County on this issue but it seems no one is listening.

Sharpton brings campaign to clean up hip-hop music to Detroit

DETROIT (AP) - Organizers of campaign to clean up hip-hop music hope to collect thousands of bars of soap as symbols of the effort to do away with sexist and depraved rap lyrics.

The Reverend Al Sharpton talked about the effort yesterday outside the Motown Historical Museum in Detroit.

The campaign began last month in New York City with Sharpton challenging the recording industry on denigrating lyrics. Organizers say they plan to soon roll out the effort in Los Angeles.

The bars of soap later will be donated to shelters and halfway houses for women.

The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) announced that its 11 public hospitals will exclude free baby formula samples from gift bags to new mothers, will ban formula promotion materials from labor and delivery units and will encourage initiation of breastfeeding in the baby’s first hour as part of a campaign to increase exclusive breastfeeding and improve infant health.

This is part of a campaign to increase breast-feeding and improve infant health.
