From what I have read about Shabazz, he is perfectly cast as Kwame. He is from the "ignore the facts, blame whitey" school of thought. I do not disagree with his take on the Detroit street corner "ministers".

Re: Old news

just amazed:

Art imitates life: Kilpatrick friend plays mayor in film

Charlie LeDuff / The Detroit News

Detroit -- Available soon in a car trunk near you: Kwame Kilpatrick, the movie.

"Scandal in the City" is a feature-length movie chronicling the low life and hard times of fictitious Mayor Calvin Kennedy, a charismatic politician who is consumed and ultimately destroyed by his ambitions and sexual appetites.

Ripped directly from the Detroit headlines, "Scandal" has an underground quality to it. The lighting gives the picture an odd, erotic patina; something akin to the color emitted by a peep-booth light bulb. What is more, the movie is chockablock with sexual situations, the murder of a stripper named Candy, a catfight between the mayor's wife and his political aide (a childhood sweetheart), a motel rendezvous, bribery, perjury, scotch and even the mayor's political mother introducing her son at a political rally as "Y'all's boy!"

Sound familiar?

What makes the picture most intriguing is that the role of Kennedy is played by the Rev. Malik Shabazz -- the real-life, protest holding, white-liquor-sipping, self-described thug-turned-preacher of the dope houses and back alleys who was -- and maintains that he still is -- the friend, confidant and defender of Kilpatrick, whose career burned down last year in a pyre of sex, lies and text messages.

For the record, Shabazz, 46, would also like it to be known that he is also the host of a cable television show called "Tuesday Thursday Truth."

"I stood with Mayor Kilpatrick when others wouldn't," Shabazz said of the former mayor. "He had a mighty fall, and I was right there with him, at his side, when few were."

Shabazz held court the other afternoon in his clubhouse on Fenkell Street on the west side of the city. A vacant lot across the street, a liquor store to the west. The marquee to his clubhouse reads The Scene. The place was decorated with Kilpatrick campaign placards, a poster of Malcolm X and a rendering of the Last Supper in which Christ and the disciples are black.

An itinerant preacher, Shabazz says he converted from hooliganism to the path of righteousness when he heard the Word at The Shrine of the Black Madonna of the Pan-African Orthodox Christian Church, which was founded in Detroit and remains an important faction in the national black power movement.

Sensitive to the fact that Kilpatrick might feel betrayed should he come across the film at a gas station check-out counter between the Slim Jims and Mike & Ike candy treats, Shabazz sent this message to Kilpatrick, now a highly compensated medical equipment salesman based in Dallas:

"Mayor Kilpatrick, you know how I feel about you and more than that I showed it. When others ran and put their tail up between their legs and punked-out and copped out and sold out, I was with you to the very end at a great cost to myself and my rep. I have no regrets and I have no regrets playing Mayor Calvin Kennedy."

Shabazz even defended the atrocious behavior of Kilpatrick, who left Detroit penniless and besieged by criminals. "Human greatness and human frailties," Shabazz said. "All men fall. Every man has weaknesses. It's the getting up where a man is measured."

Court date today

True as that may be, not all men fail so spectacularly that their imbroglios warrant a Movie of the Week, which is what we have here with "Scandal in the City."

Kilpatrick, who is scheduled to appear in a Detroit courtroom today to answer accusations by the county prosecutor that he has thumbed his nose at restitution payment to the city, could not be reached for comment.

His lawyer, Jim Thomas, said this about the film: "I haven't seen it yet, but I imagine it's great fiction."

Produced by Skyline Productions -- a local production company recently founded by Willie El, C.J. Williamson and DOT, who also co-wrote the script -- "Scandal" was filmed for a mere $50,000 entirely on location in Detroit. The producers, knowing Shabazz from around the way, asked the minister to read for the part.

"He has a presence and that James Earl Jones power about his speech, but I didn't know he could act," said Williamson.

"We were definitely impressed," added El. "He took the character to a level beyond our expectations."

Plan under wraps

The producers say the film, which took four months to shoot, will be ready for its world premiere sometime in November. While they made the trailers available, the producers would not reveal how the film resolves itself, how they plan to distribute the DVD or where the premiere will be held.

Having never acted in so much as a school play, Shabazz said he could draw on characters he has witnessed in the Detroit pulpits for inspiration.

"Most ministers in this town are acting or pimping," he said. "Look around at the misery here. Obviously 99.99 percent of the preachers are shucking and jiving and acting and pimping."

The big talking minister, who tips the scales at 340 pounds, said it was not as easy as one might think to portray an extra-large black man with an extra-large personality even if you are an extra-large black man with an extra-large personality.

"I'll let you in on a little secret," Shabazz said sheepishly. "I had a lot of difficulty with the love scenes. But I came through."

****************************************************************

OMG 99.99% of the preachers are shucking and jiving

I honestly thought as I was reading this it was just a fictitious editorial. But I think this is real.

Detroit has many "million dollar ministers". It is a great gig if you can con folks into following you. A few years back one of the local newspapers did a story on what these jackoffs owned and what they were paid. Many had yearly salaries in excess of a million dollars plus they had fancy cars and huge boats and cement ponds in their backyards. Most of the tv and news stations just ignore this idiocy. Apparently they are afraid of offending the congregations. It's a joke. I got talked into attending a service at one of the detroit mega churches 5 or so years ago. Creflo Dollar was the guest speaker. All I heard for 2 hours was tithe, tithe ,tithe 10% or more. You would think God is sitting in heaven wearing one of those clear green shaded accounting hats and going over the books to make sure everyone has paid 10% of their GROSS income to the church. F that!

Re: Detroit 1917

The detroityes forum had this photo posted by Ray1936 and it really is quite amazing

Can Bing lead Detroit out of Kilpatrick's shadow?

BY JEFF GERRITT
FREE PRESS EDITORIAL WRITER

Even as ex-mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick casts a large shadow.

Just ask Mayor Dave Bing.

I spoke with Bing in his office Wednesday about his plans to turn around the city. But as he showed me to the door, the mayor expressed some frustration about Kilpatrick’s ability to continue sucking the air out of the city, overshadowing whatever progress Detroit is making, or could make.

Mor than a year after he resigned in disgrace, Kilpatrick continues to big-time it. He keeps talking, we keep listening — and Detroit keeps bleeding.

As an example, Bing pointed to a story this week about the Detroit police department putting 150 more cops on the street , including 50 new hires through a federal grant.

That move should improve the day-to-day lives of Detroiters on the block. But Bing noted that the story got overshadowed by the former mayor's restitution hearing.

With people all over the country willing to help Detroit, and the city ready for change, the time is right to move forward, Bing said. But can we?

I probably shouldn’t say this, but I’m at the point where, when I see a story on Kilpatrick, I sometimes turn the page, change the channel, or click the mouse.

It’s not that I don’t think ongoing coverage of the former mayor’s abuses isn’t warranted or valuable. There’s no doubt that it is.

But as a Detroiter, I’m sick of it. I want this guy to go away, so we can focus on the staggering problems of the people: Blight, jobs, bus service, vacant buildings, education, public safety, street lighting, homelessness, population loss and so on.

Kilpatrick has lost his earring but not his inner bling. With him in the rear-view mirror, can we keep our eyes on the road ahead?

I think Bing is going to have to let go of the KK straglers for there to be the taxpayers trust.

And the Yatooma story...I hope someone/something breaks. Even if She-man has to go down for beating that undercover cop. And if it wasn't Tamara then why would KK want her dead?? There's so many pieces and someone needs to speak up. There's way too many conflicting stories.

Re: Question

taxpayer:

just amazed:

Missy55367:

I've got a legal question.

I don't get it as to how these trials work. So there's a murder trial, like O.J. Simpson, and everyone just stays in court, coming back day after consecutive day, until the trial is over.

But what's with this? Each time they meet with the Kwamster, he obfuscates (I've heard this a lot, and had to look it up myself!) and confuses/muddies the issues so much that they have to continue on. And instead of making the miscreant come back TOMORROW, like anyone else would have to, he gets a three week reprieve, so he can get make up more excuses and consult with his co-conspirators so they can all get their stories straight.

My question is why they can't just continue with him until the case is over? Why does he get these lengthy breaks in between? We KNOW nothing will happen on Dec. 7, and they will certainly drag this out until way after Christmas.

This Groner judge is giving the Kwamster every break in the book! And what does it say about our justice system, that a criminal is let out and has the ability to make $300K on one sale? There are gazillions of Americans out there who will not make that much in a lifetime, yet he gets "set up" very nicely here, doesn't he?

Only the privledged get so many breaks.

They didn't continue because the kwamster said he has an all important appointment (probably $300,00 sale or was that a $300,00 commision) for which he would be able to pay restitution and god forbid the court would stand in his way to making money that he could pay back .

Amazed is correct. Judge Groner has said many times that his main intention in all of this is to ensure that the citizens of Detroit get the million dollars from Kwame. Unfortunatley Kwame finds a way to take advantage of this. One thing about the hearing stands out to me. Kwame never has to be in the hot seat for more than a couple hours. His lawyer has come up with crap about letting others testify etc. If you watch Kwame carefully, he begins to unfold more, the longer he is on the witness stand. By this, I mean that you can almost see him cracking and his lil f'd up personality splitting off. He begins to screw up and divulge more information than he should because he loves to talk and take pot shots at the prosecutor. The prosecutor needs to machine gun him with fast questions and really pressure him. Kwame appears cool and calm as long as he feels in control but you really get a glimpse of what an out of control killer he is when he gets under pressure. I hope they come up with even more dirt on him before December. They have a few more names to work with and now the Detroit Schools real estate investigation is heating up. It was well known for years that if you were a contractor wanting to gain an upper hand in Detroit on a bid you needed to talk to one of the friends and family first, or hire them. I think all this will come out eventually and I think Kwame, his daddy, Bobby Fergeson and others will be looking at some real time.

Good observations, guys. Anything is possible for a short period of time - Kwame keeping "cool" and not messing up his "story"; me being on a diet.

Too bad Groner keeps falling for this. Or more likely, it's intentional, giving the Kwamster "cover".

Re: Freep Editorial, Kwame still sucking the life out of Detroit

miamia3:

NEW STIMULUS

Sometime this year, we taxpayers will again receive an Economic Stimulus payment. This is a very exciting program. I'll explain it using the Q and A format:
Q. What is an Economic Stimulus payment?
A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.
Q. Where will the government get this money?
A. From taxpayers.
Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?
A. Only a smidgen.
Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.
Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China?
A. Shut up. Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:

If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China.

If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to the Arabs.

If you purchase a computer, it will go to India.

If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala.

If you buy a car, it will go to Japan or Korea.

If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan.

If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go to management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.

Instead, keep the money in America by:

Spending it at yard sales, or

Going to ball games, or

Spending it on prostitutes, or

Beer or

Tattoos.
(These are the only American businesses still operating in the US.)

Conclusion:

Go to a ball game with a prostitute that you met at a yard sale, drink Pabst Blue Ribbon all day and then go get a new tattoo!
